Photographing Kids

It might sound easy but capturing the perfect shot of those crazy kids always on the move can be a tough one. The following is a list of helpful tips and tricks to make the process a little easier.

1/ A phone camera will do. Good equipment is helpful but who carries around a huge SLR camera these days? Phone cameras have come a long way and we always have our phones at the ready for that opportune moment

2/ Lighting is key to creating those amazing shots. Avoid harsh middle of the day sunlight that casts dark unflattering shadows. Instead opt for early evening warm light just as the sun is starting to get low in the sky…always make sure the sun is behind you (the photographer)

3/ Avoid requesting “smile for the camera” moments. These can be sweet but they certainly don’t make for the best photos of your little ones. Capture an unexpected look up at the sky, smell of a flower or connection with ones environment. These moments capture the true delight of childhood

4/ Make it fun! Engage children with props and allow them to feel in control of the shoot even if they are not. Let them share their ideas and invite them to bring their favourite toys, pets and anything that interests them to the shoot

5/ Get down on their level making you much more approachable and not looming and tall over them. This lower angle also avoids distorting proportions from a photographer standing tall over shorter subjects and shooting down!

I agree that candid shots make the best photos vs. the posed/forced photos. I love taking photos of my little girl, but I do know that I’ll have to snap like twenty pictures to get just one or two really good ones.
